Dopo il buio c’è sempre il sereno

After the darkness comes the calm

A Tuscan landscape, a sudden glimpse and…

Knowing my passion for photography, a friend sent me a picture she had taken with her mobile phone. Instantly, the poetic spark was lit. I then wrote these few lines to comment on that evocative shot, giving the words a metrical hue and composing them in decasyllables.

After the darkness comes the calm

Beneath the sky now covered with dark clouds
the scene of true turmoil reveals itself,
presenting to the eye of everyone
the jet-black shadow reigning over all.
That ordinary day is drawing closed,
and pitiless the evening now descends.
The storm at last has loosened its fierce hold,
and far away, deep down the view expands:
a golden light appears at the day’s end,
the horizon commanding all the world.
It seemed that there was truly no more hope,
with all the light obscured within the sky,
yet that last ray of sunlight far away
has given birth to a bridge of bright hues,
restoring in the eyes of everyone
a wonder surging forward in the heart.
The nature of the King who gives all life
confirms itself in the created art,
ruled by the Sun that rises ever more,
it plays a gentle, tender melody.
And here at last the hidden key is found:
facing the truest climb with steady strength,
riding upon that radiant rainbow arch—
after the darkness comes the calm again.
