The Avenue of Twilight

The sun slowly
laid itself down
upon its nightly bed,
yet remained
the center of the cosmos.

Humanity, too,
walked that avenue behind it:
the twilight drew near,
with one difference:
the next day, the sun
would rise again
where it had always been,

but humanity,
with an added day on its shoulders,
was moving toward its end.

The wise had to tread carefully,
mindful of their thoughts and words,
lest the ignorant
feel wounded—
while the earth was filling
with dead souls.

The avenue of twilight
was close at hand.

For the sun, it’s a matter of perspective—
for humanity,
perspective is a sentence…
