Cercando l’Arcobaleno – Chasing the Rainbow

A sentence found on the wrapper of a famous chocolate.
Thank you, dear friend, for sending it to me.
From a thought sparked by those few words, this piece in free verse was born.
Perhaps I could have adjusted a word or two,
but I wrote it just like this. First take, best take…

Cercando l’Arcobaleno
(Chasing the Rainbow)

Life chooses the music,
we choose how to dance to it.
So we feel compelled
to dance — or not.
Through highs and lows,
bound by the law of duality,
we follow the directives
of that becoming
which forces us to wear
an uncomfortable yoke
and to subjugate.
Almost as if we were
at the mercy of the waves,
continuing to dance
sometimes on calm
or stormy seas.
But nothing happens by chance,
and even if at times
the conductor changes,
the music always stays the same.
Like a flag in the wind,
the banner flutters,
the anemometer spins wildly,
to the point of “driving us mad.”
Until, endowed with free will,
we decide at some point
to change course.
Almost as if we felt within us
a voice calling,
or — a sharp, raw sensation —
heard it weeping, as if
the soul were
truly desperate and bare.
Maybe I’ve gazed too often
at the lowly ground, and now the time has come
to lift my eyes to the sky,
following, after a terrible storm,
the colors of that bridge
called Rainbow.
And then the Music changes,
becomes heavenly,
and under the right guidance,
the road — though steep and hard —
leads to the Glorious Haven
in the safest way.
