Massa Marittima

Il patrimonio storico-culturale italiano, vanta una colonia di insediamenti in terra di Toscana.

Partendo da Follonica ed avventurandosi verso Siena, passando da Massa Marittima, splendida cittadina  arroccata sulle Colline Metallifere, sopra la salita di “schianta-petto”, si può fare una suggestiva quanto splendida tappa fra vicoli di borghi antichi con le botteghe artigiane tipiche del luogo, ammirare lo splendido Duomo, cornice anche del Teatro estivo “Sotto le Stelle”, dove in estate vengono rappresentate Opere liriche. Massa Marittima offre altri interessanti luoghi e panorami caratteristici da poter vistare camminando “lento pede” per le salite e le discese medievali. Comune libero fin dalla fine del XIII sec., la Città del “Balestro del Girifalco” (quarta domenica di Maggio e seconda domenica di Agosto), mostra anche edifici storici di notevole interesse culturale:

La Cattedrale di San Cerbone, (Duomo) costruita nella suggestiva piazza a forma di Stella con  la cupola ottagonale e l’interno, a tre navate, conserva numerose opere d’arte. A sinistra della Cattedrale si affaccia sulla piazza il Palazzo Vescovile.

Anche i Palazzi storici sono di notevole importanza e datati di qualche secolo:

Nel Palazzo del Podestà di fattura duecentesca come la Cattedrale, si può visitare il Museo Archeologico.

Il Palazzo dei conti di Biserno, duecentesco, si trova fra il Palazzo del Podestà e la sede del  Palazzo Comunale. In quest’ultimo costruito in epoca medievale, abbiamo la cinquecentesca Cappella dei Priori.

Il Palazzo Malfatti con le sue Logge, è risalente al XIII secolo e si trova di fronte al Palazzo Comunale.

Nel centro storico, oltre a botteghe, palazzi, Chiese, Musei e quant’altro possa far rivivere la suggestione di epoche remote, non mancano i caratteristici e originali Ristoranti, Trattorie, Pizzerie e Bar, ricavati dalle costruzioni esistenti che vanno dal XIII al XV sec. la semplicità e l’ospitalità dei Massetani fa da cornice a questo splendido quadro che, come vedremo, è la caratteristica che si ripeterà anche nei dintorni di Massa Marittima e nei  paesi della Maremma e della Toscana.

Per arrivare a Massa Marittima da Follonica si percorrono 21 km in poco più di 25 minuti.

Italy’s historical and cultural heritage boasts countless settlements in the land of Tuscany.
Departing from Follonica and heading towards Siena, a stop in Massa Marittima—a splendid town perched on the Colline Metallifere (Metal-bearing Hills), just above the steep “schianta-petto” climb—is both evocative and rewarding. Visitors can stroll through the narrow alleys of ancient villages, discover traditional artisan workshops, and admire the magnificent Cathedral, which also serves as the backdrop for the summer opera festival “Sotto le Stelle,” where classical performances are held under the stars.

Massa Marittima is a town to explore slowly, on foot, through its medieval climbs and descents. A free commune since the late 13th century, it is known for its traditional event, the Balestro del Girifalco (held on the fourth Sunday of May and the second Sunday of August). The town also offers several historical buildings of notable cultural interest:

• Cathedral of San Cerbone – Located in the star-shaped main square, the Duomo features an octagonal dome and a three-nave interior filled with artistic treasures. To the left of the cathedral stands the Episcopal Palace.

• Church of San Francesco – In Gothic style

• Church of San Pietro all’Orto – Dating from the 14th century

• Church of San Rocco – From the 15th century

• Church of Sant’Agostino

• Former Church of San Michele

• Church of Santa Chiara

• Former Monastery of Santa Chiara

• Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot

Also notable is the Fonte dell’Abbondanza (“Fountain of Abundance”).

Among the historic palaces, several deserve special mention:

• Palazzo del Podestà – Dating back to the 13th century like the Cathedral; it houses the Archaeological Museum.

• Palazzo dei Conti di Biserno – From the same period, located between the Podestà Palace and the Town Hall (Palazzo Comunale), which includes the Chapel of the Priors, built in the 16th century.

• Palazzo Malfatti – With its distinctive arcades, it dates to the 13th century and stands opposite the Town Hall.

• Palazzo Bandini – Built in the 12th century.

• Palazzo Pannocchieschi – From the 13th century.

• Palazzo Albizzeschi – Birthplace of Saint Bernardino.

• Fountains of Abundance – Constructed in the 13th century.

• Ancient Mint Building of Massa Marittima

• Palazzo delle Armi – A Renaissance-style building in the “New Town” area.

In the historic center, alongside churches, museums, and palaces that bring the atmosphere of past centuries back to life, you’ll also find restaurants, trattorias, pizzerias, and bars housed within structures dating from the 13th to the 15th century. The hospitality and simplicity of the Massetani people complete the portrait of this wonderful town—characteristics that you will also find in the surroundings of Massa Marittima and throughout Maremma and Tuscany.

From Follonica, Massa Marittima is 21 km away, about 25 minutes by car.
