Il Sole dell’Amicizia : The Sun of Friendship

Il Sole dell’Amicizia : The Sun of Friendship
The Sun of Friendship
dedicated to
Marcus Tullius Cicero
Summarizing in a few lines the figure and work of Marcus Tullius Cicero is an arduous task. I would say impossible. Therefore, I will limit myself to a brief synthesis to introduce the lyric dedicated to him.
His vast literary production, ranging from political orations to writings on philosophy and rhetoric, can be considered the model of classical Latin literature.

The Sun of Friendship
Gold and Silver,
right and left,
Sun and Moon.
What is the greatest
fortune that humanity
can have?
If you observe Nature,
it is the Sun,
inexhaustible source
of warmth,
of life, of light, of love.
Looking within oneself
one will discover that it corresponds
to the theophanic place
par excellence:
the heart.
Outside oneself
it can be a tree
that bears a sweet,
gentle first fruit.
This fruit is
true friendship.
I would not wish to play the know-it-all,
yet in his time
Cicero already said it:
“Those who remove
friendship from life,
remove the Sun from the world.”
Think of what would become
of everything that surrounds us
and permeates us
if the Sun no longer existed.
The solar and planetary system
would collapse,
everything would become
a curtain
of impenetrable ice,
extinguishing even the flame
of the last lantern.
Now I would not wish to play the pedant,
yet the concept
of Cicero’s aphorism
is subtle, elevated,
and very profound.
Think carefully:
“Those who remove
friendship from life,
remove the Sun from the world.”
