L’apostrofo, virgoletta sopraelevata che genera l’elisione tra due vocali, ha la stessa valenza di un virgola comune. Esse possono cambiare il senso di un discorso o di un concetto. Un amico mi ha inviato l’immagine della mongolfiera, trovata sul web e che lui ha simpaticamente modificato aggiungendo la scritta con cui concludo il componimento settenario, nato proprio da quella buffa frase. Il gioco di parole nel titolo sta a significare che spostando un apostrofo, cambia il senso di una parola. Nel testo invece, t’elevi è legato a una elevazione spirituale, mentre te levi, vuol dire te ne vai. Insieme con il traduttore, ho trovato la formula che più si adatta, secondo me, ad un lettore anglofono. mi auguro che venga apprezzata l’ironia e la goliardia con cui è scritto questo componimento settenario (in italiano).

A friend of mine sent me an image of a hot-air balloon he found online. He amusingly added a phrase to it, and that playful caption inspired the short poem that follows, written entirely in seven-syllable lines.

The pun in the title hinges on a simple twist: by shifting an apostrophe, the meaning of a word transforms. In Italian, t’elevi implies spiritual elevation, whereas te levi means “you get out of the way” or “you’re gone.”

Working together with the translator, I’ve found what I believe to be the best way to carry this clever nuance into English. I hope the reader will enjoy the light irony and friendly wordplay that breathe through this brief poetic composition.

Talvolta basta solo

l’apostrofo diverso

per cambiare quel senso

a frase ben profonda

purché non si confonda

il serio col faceto.

La realtà ben dura

da metabolizzare,

come secchiata d’acqua

così fredda e gelata

da non parafrasare

e in un modo capire.

Non facciamola lunga

cerchiamo d’esser brevi:

“O t’elevi o te levi!!!”

Sometimes it takes no more
than a shifted apostrophe
to change the whole intent
of words that seemed so deep—
as long as we don’t blur
the solemn with the sly.

Reality hits hard,
not easy to digest,
like icy water flung
against a bare-skinned chest—
too cold to paraphrase,
too sharp to misread.

So let’s not make it long,
let’s keep it short and terse:
“Ascend—or end!”
