It Rains Beauty
When the physical eye is struck by something special, it sends an impulse to the heart, which sees with its “own eye.” The quickness of the reflexes, guided by both physical eyes and vibrating together with the cardiac one, makes the impulse irresistible, so that the artist, whoever he may be, captures, immortalizes, fixes, and describes that sensation through photography, sculpture, painting, or poetry.
The union that springs from it does not clash with the idea of the artists: each one, in his own way, wishes to give luster to the other form of expression, acknowledging its inspiring merits.
In practice, if I had not seen this image, to which I cannot give an adjective, I would not have had the inspiration for this composition in decasyllables. A heartfelt thank you to the author, the photographer Alberto Ghizzi Panizza, and to the Facebook page Siena Siena Meraviglia d’Italia, which published it.
While Dostoevskij writes that “beauty will save the world,” Gogol states that “if Art does not perform the miracle of transforming the soul of the spectator, it is nothing but a passing passion.”
It Rains Beauty
When the passing eye beholds it,
and the heart remains deeply struck,
even the water fallen from heaven
enriches that rain-soaked mantle,
reflecting the true image
of its Cathedral rising imperious
there in the heart of magical Sena.
That blue streaked with orange
seems the Mantle of Virgin Mother
who protects Siena’s children,
giving a sense of divine peace.
Impetuous Saint Michael rises,
with his lance high into the heavens,
rebuking whoever might dare
offend that City raised up
to the Virgin Mother, the Advocate.
