Cavalli sciolti – Free Horses
Introduction
Free Horses was born from an image that emerged while listening to a musical improvisation: horses running free across a boundless land, among cacti, arid mountains and endless deserts.
That run gradually becomes an inner journey: from conquering one’s own freedom to searching for a direction, and finally to the desire to return in order to guide and save those who risk becoming lost in the “desert of nothingness”.
A poem born from music, therefore, but which has ultimately become a reflection on freedom, awareness and responsibility towards others.
The origin of the poem
On 22 June 2021, my friend Davide Parola posted this video on his Facebook page. I later learned that it was a “spontaneous invention”, improvised by music designer Stefano Maccarelli for a demonstration.
Of course, the performance, although it was only a demonstration, did not leave me indifferent. Through my imagination I “saw” free horses running wild and…
I apologise if not everyone can listen to the music because they do not have a Facebook profile, but as far as I know, the only link to watch the video is the one indicated at the bottom of the page.
Free Horses
Music 4 sec.
From the past there rise in my mind
images and memories
of a time that once was
before this one.
Music 14 sec.
The visions grow ever stronger
of a desolate, boundless land
surrounded by cacti and arid mountains.
Music 24 sec.
I see free horses without reins
galloping faster
and stronger than my thoughts.
Music 34 sec.
I mount a black one without a saddle,
difficult to tame,
but after a tenacious resistance
and struggle, I succeed.
Music 44 sec.
And I feel free
to run and gallop with them.
Music 52 sec.
Then, all of a sudden, I find myself
on a white horse, more docile
than the first one I rode,
and I set out in search of the free herd
so that I can gather them
and lead them back in the right direction,
to a place where they will lack nothing
of all they could ever desire.
Music 1 min. 35 sec.
And once they have been led back to their origin,
I return to go and save others
who risk becoming lost
in the boundless desert of nothingness.
